CCP hunts down “Gold Buyers” in Eve Online - New Anti-RMT tactics?
My friend over at A Clockwork Mind got busted for RMT in Eve Online by CCP. Instead of banning him, the company put him deeply in debt forcing him to work for months or buy currency cards from the company to get way out of trouble.
CCP threatened to ban the account, but by puttiing him into deep debt, the company creates a strong incentive to pay a “fine” to continue to play with the character. Also, no one is going to engage in RMT with a character that they don’t care about.
Powerful “Security Judo” by CCP!
The character is crippled until he pays of his debt. A negative cash balance is a real simple flag for limiting the functions a player can perform and a huge negative balance effectively defines the punishment.
-500 million ISK - Ouch
This does add another anti-RMT tactic:
Auction seeding - seed auction sites, like eBay, with currency and other items to purchase. You make money on the purchase and then punish the player for the violation of the EULA. This is very cost-effective. The possibility of a company seller creates a great deterrent. Players won’t know who they are buying from creating a risk of getting caught on every transaction.
Game companies should contact their lawyers before baiting this kind of honeytrap. They probably should also add a warning on any gift or exchange of items between players that RMT is a violation of the EULA.
